One of your New Year’s resolutions have been to pay more attention to your SAR dog. Another resolution might be to be more proactive on keeping your dog’s ears clean and healthy.
Regular inspection and cleaning of ears are important to maintain ear healthiness and avoid complications. Inspecting the ears of your dog once a week, and cleaning them if needed, should be part of the regular grooming routine.
All dogs can get ear infections but some are more prone to them:
- Dogs with allergies which is the No. 1 cause of ear problems in dogs.
- Dogs with floppy or droopy ears, such as cocker spaniels, goldenretrievers, Labrador retrievers, basset hounds, Irish setters, and other breeds whose floppy ears cover the ear canal and prevent air from entering.
- Dogs that like to swim or get wet. Moisture can often cause bacteria and yeast to grow.
